My electrician is ready to install a second meter and 240V 60A plug for my Level 2 EVSE, reducing the time of a full charge from 17 to 7 hours. Disconnect, installation, inspection and reconnect should take nearly 5 hours. This will take place on the 12th.

Dodge Magnum parked in EV stall

This Dodge Magnum was parked in the EV charging stall at Kohl’s Antioch. I asked a manager if there was a policy for EV parking priority. He sounded genuinely concerned as well as educated about the EV charging stall, although he said it was first come first served, and that he will relay my concern to regional.

PG&E rate / schedule change a bust, for now.

PG&E asked the CPUC, California Public Utilities Commission, for a rate structure change that would have positives and negatives for the EV customer. Apparently the rate and schedule change didn’t go through on November 1st, as PG&E asked. Although that may always change in the future, it’s a signal for those who are interested in a separate meter to charge their EV to go forward, as I am still going to do.

Better news is that summer and winter off-peak tier 1 pricing went down $0.01729/kWh. This means my operating cost for my EV would be $15 in the summer and $18 in the winter, per month.

I recently reviewed the Nissan Leaf on Kelley Blue Book. I had to omit part of my review in order for it to be accepted, redacted part in italics:

I love this car. My Leaf is the most advanced mass produced vehicle currently available. Others talk about the feeling of passing gas stations in their Leaf, I love the feeling when passing 5000 miles and not needing to go in for an oil change. You’re emitting zero CO2 to operate, couple that with solar at home and you’re carbon neutral for transportation.

I drive 54 miles during commute hours daily, all freeway miles and I have around 20-30 miles left at the end of the day. I know I’m not the most efficient driver, but I guess the idea here is, if you use your car legally, <65mph when posted, it'll out perform the detractors' low ball stats. If you’re an aggressive driver and consistently drive 80mph, stick with your gas guzzling SUVs and let the real men and women save the planet.
